Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi confirmed reached an agreement with former Sampdoria and Lecce manager Roberto D’Aversa to become their next head coach.
The Tuscans narrowly avoided relegation this past season after Davide Nicola guided the team to a late win over Roma in the final round of the season. Despite successfully evading the drop, Nicola opted for other opportunities and is expected to be announced as the new manager of Cagliari in the coming days.
“The choice of D’Aversa stems from his capabilities and the appeal he has with the team. I liked him, and my intuition told me he was the right person to lead the squad,” Corsi told RAI TG3.
“I’m sorry with how things worked out with Nicola, he deserves a statue but he’ll certainly be recognised just like others before him. He accomplished a huge feat, but clearly he didn’t see us as the best option for his career given he pursued other options.”
He continued, “We’re at a crucial stage, and we’re looking for players that consider Empoli an important opportunity. We’ll integrate five or six youngsters into the team we believe can bring value technically and as an asset.”
“It’s going to be tough again in the upcoming season, but we’ll give it our all.”
Meanwhile, Corriere dello Sport reports they’re also working to reacquire right back Bartosz Bereszynski, who spent last season with the club on loan, from Sampdoria.
The 31 year-old was heavily relied upon this past season after he played sparsely during his brief loan stint with champions Napoli.
