Empoli unveiled newly acquired striker Francesco Caputo after finalising a deal with Sampdoria to bring the veteran back to the club.
The 35 year-old spent two seasons in Tuscany before leaving for Sassuolo in 2019 then moving to Sampdoria on loan last year. After experiencing a reduction in playing time to start the campaign, Caputo opted to return to Empoli with Sam Lammers moving in the other direction.
“I’m not going to criticise my former club, in fact I’d like to thank the Samp supporters who showed their affection for me,” he told reporters.
“It’s been a difficult year and a half for me, though. I really needed to feel important and loved again—Empoli was the club where I experienced my best moments as a player, including being called-up to the Italian national team.”
He continued, “That’s why I hoped to return here. I wanted to give something back to this club and this city.”
