Former Inter and Monza central defender Andrea Ranocchia elaborated on his decision to retire from football earlier this season.
The 35 year-old announced his decision in September, just a few months after he joined the Biancorossi on a free transfer following his 12-year stint with the Nerazzurri.
“The injury I suffered in August is what gave me the last push to finally call it quits,” Ranocchia told Tuttomercatoweb.
“I did the math right after the injury: it was still summer and the transfer market was still open, allowing Monza to find a replacement.”
“I suffered the injury on 21 August against Napoli. After undergoing examinations, we learned it was a major injury and after three weeks in cast I informed (Andrea) Galliani of my decision and that we could terminate the contract.”
“It wasn’t an impromptu decision, I’d thought about it for awhile. I have to thank him (Galliani) for his behavior with me.”
Finally, “Had I not suffered the injury I would have continued playing with Monza. After leaving Inter, I still had the passion to continue playing and immediately accepted the opportunity they provided me with.”
“However, the injury meant I wouldn’t have returned at least until January or February. I didn’t want to put the club in trouble so I informed them while the market was still open.”
“Just a few days later, they finalised a deal for (Armando) Izzo.”
