Juventus has officially declared that Federico Chiesa is no longer part of the squad, raising questions about how the situation deteriorated to this point and what might happen next.
The Italian player was a standout performer during the EURO 2020 victory just three years ago, following his move from Fiorentina to Juventus. However, he was notably absent from the team in a recent pre-season friendly against Brest, solidifying his status as an outcast at the club.
There are multiple reasons behind the 26-year-old’s fall from a key player to a burden for Juventus. Chiesa’s transfer from Fiorentina in 2020 was a significant investment, initially on loan for €12.6m and then with an obligation to buy for €44.6m in 2022. His transfer saga with Fiorentina, where he refused to sign a new contract and insisted on joining Juventus, has not been forgotten by the club’s management.
Chiesa’s contract with Juventus expires in June 2025, but his indecision about his next move and lack of concrete offers have put him in a difficult position. While the Premier League is a potential destination, top clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea have not shown strong interest, and Chiesa is not keen on moving to Napoli or Roma in Italy.
The arrival of Thiago Motta at Juventus has been cited as a factor in Chiesa’s exclusion from the squad, but conflicts with former coach Max Allegri and his injury history have also played a role. Despite his versatility on the field, Chiesa’s preference for playing close to the touchline and his inconsistent performance have led Juventus to focus on developing young talent like Kenan Yildiz.
Juve’s decision to potentially sell Chiesa for €20-30m reflects their concerns about his reliability and high salary demands. However, the lack of interest from other clubs highlights the challenges in finding a suitable transfer for the talented winger.
