Spezia earned a crucial result in their fight to avoid relegation thanks to their 1-1 draw in Tuscany against Fiorentina.
The draw snaps La Viola’s nine-match winning streak in all competitions while Leonardo Semplici’s men secured a valuable point, increasing the space between themselves and 18th placed Hellas Verona by seven points.
The Ligurians frustrated the hosts throughout the affair. Vincenzo Italiano’s side struggled to create high quality chances, unable to breakdown the visitors defensive, counter-attacking approach. Although they tallied nearly 20 shots, Fiorentina ended the game with an xG (expected goals) under 1.00 in total.
Fiorentina initially took the lead through an own goal after Cristiano Biraghi’s cross deflected off Przemyslaw Wisniewski and ended up in the back of the net.
However, less than ten minutes later, M’Bala Nzola made the most of a defensive miscommunication and slid the ball past Pietro Terracciano to level the score.
After the break, neither side created a meaningful chance to score another goal, settling for a 1-1 draw.
