Football legend Pelé passes away at 82

Footballing legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, widely known as Pelé, has passed away following an extended battle with colon cancer his agent, Joe Fraga, confirmed.

Winner of three World Cups, the Brazilian icon had been hospitalised since late November at Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in São Paulo, where he recently began receiving palliative care.

Commonly referred to as “The King”, Pelé set the scoring record for Brazil’s national team with 77 goals scored in 92 official appearances with the Seleção.

Following his retirement in 1977, he quickly became one of the most important and recognised global ambassadors for football—becoming the face of Brazil’s successful bid to host the 2014 World Cup and often
