Italian football was dealt a major blow late yesterday after it was revealed the country’s “decreto crescita” would be overhauled beginning January 1, 2024.
The news comes after Italy’s Council of Ministers met yesterday and agreed to crackdown on the tax benefit which took effect in 2019.
The rule was designed to incentivise foreign investment in Italy by providing workers and companies tax breaks up to nearly 50%. Serie A clubs took major advantage of the rule given they’d only pay tax on half of a foreign player’s potential wages.
Although the reforms come into effect in the new year, it will still hold consequences for the players signed this past summer by Serie A clubs. Given their activity this past summer, Milan will be heavily affected by the reform due to an increased tax burden on Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Samuel Chukwueze and Tijjani Reijnders.
