Tigre striker Mateo Retegui spoke to ESPN before heading to Italy this evening to complete his transfer to Genoa.
Retegui, who will undergo his medical examinations tomorrow, admitted his future with the Italian national team factored into his decision to move to Europe and join Il Grifone.
“I am very happy and excited about what is happening to me,” he said. “It’s a dream I had as a child to play in Europe, and it’s coming true.”
“Why Serie A and Genoa? We made the decision as a family, and we thought it was the best one. I am joining a great club, and I am happy and ready to learn. I want to be closer to Italian football and do my best to grow, learn, and be prepared if called upon (by the national team).”
He continued, “(Former Inter striker) Diego Milito had a big impact on my choice. My family and I were in contact with him and had a chance to meet with him. He spoke very highly of the club and the city.”
“I’m eager to play and win in Serie A, hopefully it’s the right league for me. I need to keep my feet on the ground but I’m aware how important this opportunity is for me.”
“I’ll take things one day at a time but the most crucial thing for me is to grow and learn from Italian football, which is a dynamic and thrilling league. I’m thrilled about this opportunity.”
